Spotlight on Denise Lucas

Liberty School is proud to shine a spotlight on several staff members throughout the school year. Staff members’ names have been drawn at random. They will be featured monthly both on a bulletin board at school as well as in the local newspaper. This month’s Spotlight is on Denise Lucas.

Mrs. Denise Lucas is in her second year as the nurse at Liberty School. She worked as a substitute nurse for the district for five years prior to being hired full time. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has completed graduate studies and earned her school nurse certificate from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Mrs. Lucas says her favorite part of her job as school nurse is the students and working independently in her practice. Lucas says, “I have wanted to be a school nurse since I started my public health rotation in nursing school.” She says the least favorite part of her job is getting up early.

During her free time, Denise likes to bake and spend time with her family. She enjoys reading, and historical fiction is her favorite genre, though she says she will “read everything from cereal boxes to biographies.” She also enjoys traveling.

Mrs. Lucas’ favorite bird is the hummingbird because they are fun to watch. Her favorite colors are pink and Carolina blue. She doesn’t collect anything, but she says she likes cookbooks and Precious Moments figurines. If she won a million dollars, Mrs. Lucas says she would spend a lot of it on her children’s college education and paying off her house. She will also donate money to charity and travel.

When it comes to changing the world, Mrs. Lucas says “In general, it seems there is a lack of respect and sense of responsibility.” She would like to see people take more ownership of their actions and responsibility for their obligations and how they treat others.

Mrs. Lucas says her funniest memory from her time at Liberty School is the excitement students have when they lose a tooth. “They like getting a little box from my office to keep their tooth in for safe keeping until they get home,” she says.

Denise and her husband, Jim, have been married for 26 years. They have four daughters: Autumn, Becky, Elizabeth, and Sarah. She says she has lived in the Liberty community longer than she has lived any other place. “It’s a good place to be,” says Lucas.

Thank you, Mrs. Lucas, for being a valued member of our school and community.
